The British Academy is currently inviting applications from scholars in specific subject areas to apply for one of two special funds administered by the Academy.

Applications for both funds must be submitted via the e-GAP system, accessible at https://egap.britac.ac.uk Intending applicants need to register themselves in the system, if not already registered, and should access full details by following the links to ‘funding schemes’ from the personal welcome page, and then links to these specific schemes.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 5 December 2012

Neil Ker Memorial Fund
The object of this fund, established by the family and friends of Neil R Ker, FBA, is to promote the study of Western medieval manuscripts, in particular those of British interest. Applications are invited from both early career and established scholars of any nationality, engaged on original research intended to produce monographs, editions or studies of documents, texts or illustrations, that include the analysis of the distinctive features of original manuscripts. Applicants should be of postdoctoral status, or have comparable experience. Awards are offered to support any aspect of research, including travel and publication. Grants are not available to fund attendance at conferences or seminars.

Level of grant: Awards do not normally exceed £2,000

Stein-Arnold Exploration Fund
The Fund was established according to the terms of the Will of Sir Aurel Stein, FBA, to commemorate his friendship with Sir Thomas Arnold, FBA, for ‘the encouragement of research on the antiquities or historical geography or early history or arts of those parts of Asia which come within the sphere of the ancient civilisations of India, China, and Iran, including Central Asia, or of one or more of these and so that special consideration shall be paid, if possible, to research of this character bearing upon the territories comprised in the present Kingdom of Afghanistan including the region of ancient Bactria and in the north-western frontier region of India’.

Research should be ‘so far as possible by means of exploratory work’, and applicants must be British or Hungarian subjects.

Applicants should be of postdoctoral status or have comparable experience. Applications are not accepted from postgraduate students.

Level of grant: Awards do not normally exceed £2,500.
