BBSRC Annual Focus in Responsive mode: Welfare of managed animals (including livestock and companion animals)

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has issued a call for its welfare of managed animals strategic priority area to encourage the research community in this area to submit to their responsive mode deadline on 9 Janaury 2013. This aims to encourage high-quality research that seeks to understand and promote the welfare of managed animals in the UK including farmed, laboratory, companion and zoo animals. Research under this priority should seek to increase knowledge of:

  • the basic behavioural, neurobiological, immune, metabolic, physiological and tissue responses of animals to their environmental conditions;
  • the consequences of human intervention, genetic selection and management for the normal function of animals;
  • the incidence and alleviation of disease, pain and mental disorders.

Research will inform strategies for improving the conditions and management of animals, with particular reference to the current situation in the UK.
